In 1732 James Oglethorpe and 35 poor English families founded the colony of Georgia on the high ground at the mouth of the Savannah river. Oglethorpe laid out a grid of four squares and gave each family a town lot, a garden plot and a fifty-acre farm plot. Thus the first planned city in the new world was established. Oglethorpes vision, providing for residential, commercial and public space, predates the current urban trend toward “mixed use” by over 200 years.
Savannah's Historical Preservation
By 1851 the four squares grew to 24 and, amazingly, all but two still exist. Through over two centuries of war and industrial growth the city has maintained Oglethorpes original vision. Savannah remains the destination of choice for travelers who want to immerse themselves in the charm and history of the Old South.
The squares define the cultural identity of Savannah and its citizens. Pedestrions have the right of way in a square mile downtown cris-crossed with over 500 intersections. A person can walk from square to square to square without ever having to stop for a car.
