A Sportsman's Paradise - Steinhatchee, Fl

Nestled in Apalachee Bay on the Gulf of Mexico along Florida's Big Bend is the fishing village of Steinhatchee (pronounced steenn 'rhymes with bean'-hatch-ee). Unlike many other areas of the state this is not some theme park re-creation, but the real thing; an old North Florida fishing village and a throw back to simpler times. The Steinhatchee is one of several rivers that empty into Apalachee Bay where a mean tidal range of approximately three feet means there is always shallow water for great fishing and shell fishing. Throw in the Gulf for off shore fishing and the river for canoeing and kyaking, secluded river front resorts and you have a true Sportsman's Paradise.

Scalloping - A Unique Adventure Scalloping in Steinhatchee

Steinhatchee is one of the few places where you can harvest your own scallops. Summertime is Scalloping season in Florida, where the season runs July 1 through September 10. The bivalve mollusks thrive in the shallow grass flats along the coastline and collecting your limit is a simple pleasure. The only equipment you need is a mask, snorkel, fins, and a mesh bag to hold the scallops (and don't forget the suncreen). The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sets the season and regulations each year and a license is required (which you can get at any of the listed marinas) so check back in the spring and make your plans!

Fishing in the Gulf

There is great fishing, near and off shore, year round. Amberjack, Flounder, Grouper and Sea Trout are among the many Species you'll find. Steinhatchee offers several fine marinas where you can launch or rent your boat, buy bait and tackle and get excellent advice. There are plentiful charters and guides available.

And Don't forget the River

The Steinhatchee River runs 28 miles from Cooks Hammock in Mallory Swamp to Dead Mans Bay at the Gulf at Steinhatchee. It runs underground for several miles and emerges at Steinhatchee Springs from where it is navigable. Take a canoe or kayak excursion down the river and experience the abundant native flora and fauna. You'll see otters, pass a beaver dam and maybe even find a manatee. There's even Steinhatchee Falls, a rarity in Florida, where you can experience the, brief but still fun, white water! There are ample boat ramps or you can rent a canoe or kayak for reasonable prices.
